Tornados Top Young Harris in Season OpenerFebruary 8, 2013
Young Harris, Ga.- The Tornados plated five runs in the 4th inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit and take a 7-3 victory in their 2013 season opener at Young Harris on Friday afternoon.
With BC trailing 2-0 after two innings, Champ Stuart led off the 3rd with a walk and later scored on a Mountain Lion fielding error to make it 2-1.
In the 4th, BC’s Bennett Hixson sparked a two-out rally with a double before Aaron Goforth was hit by a pitch. Stuart then grounded to shortstop with runners on first and second, but reached on a throwing error that allowed Hixson to score and Goforth to move to third.
After Chad Funkhouser worked a walk, Eric Renegar singled in Goforth and Stuart to give the Tornados a 4-2 lead.
Funkhouser and Renegar later scored when Young Harris leftfielder David Atwood misplayed a ball off the bat of Christian Christopoulos, putting the Tornados up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Brevard College starter Kevin Hamilton (W, 1-0) tossed six solid innings to earn the victory, allowing only two earned runs while striking out five.
BC tacked on another run in the 5th after an RBI double by Hixson scored Matt Proffitt, who worked a one-out walk.
BC reliever Chad Fisher (S, 1) entered the game in the 8th with the bases loaded in relief of Alex Litaker, who allowed an unearned run in 1.1 innings after taking over for Hamilton.
Fisher fanned Young Harris second basemen Mike Medori before getting Spencer Thomas to ground into a fielder’s choice to strand the bases loaded and earn the save. Fisher struck out the side in the 9th.
The Tornados play a double header with Young Harris tomorrow afternoon, with the first game slated to start at 12 p.m.
