Tornados Drop Two to Virginia Intermont
Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College softball team (1-3) dropped both games of a doubleheader with the Virginia Intermont Cobras (4-0) on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 in the first game and 3-1 in game two.
Game One – Virginia Intermont 3, Brevard 0
The Cobras jumped out to a 3-0 advantage against BC starter Jamie Hrobak (L, 1-1) with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Katie Smith walked to lead off the game for the Cobras and stole second before Hrobak struck out Krystle Brenneman and Katelyn Mitchell.
Micalah Sacre singled with two outs to score Smith and put the Cobras in front 1-0. Samantha Perry-Shifflett then homered over the left field fence to give Virginia Intermont a 3-0 lead.
Hrobak held the Cobras scoreless over the final six innings, but Brevard struggled to score against Virginia Intermont starter Rachel Watts (W, 1-0). The sophomore scattered five hits over four innings and allowed only six Tornado base runners in her four innings.
Bailee Packett (S, 1) tossed three perfect innings for the Cobras to earn the save.
Game Two - Virginia Intermont 3, Brevard 1
The Tornados ended a scoreless tie in the 4th inning of the second game when Kayla Clemens doubled in Emily Boykin to give BC a 1-0 lead.
Clemens (L, 0-1), who also started on the mound for BC, worked around five hits in the first five innings to keep the Cobras off the board.
Clemens, however, ran into trouble in the 6th when Brenneman singled to lead off the inning. Brenneman stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before Perry-Shifflett walked. Both would score on a double by Hannah McCloud to put the Cobras ahead 2-1.
Megan Perry-Shifflett added an insurance run for Virginia Intermont with an RBI double that plated McCloud before Clemens struck out Samantha Belcher to end the inning.
The Tornados had a base runner in both the 6th and 7th inning, but VIC reliever Lauren Smith (W, 1-0) was able to keep the Tornados at bay to preserve the win.
The Tornados are on the road next as they visit Johnson C. Smith University for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 and 6 p.m. in Charlotte. The Cobras, meanwhile, host Southern Virginia University on February 16th.
