Tornados Earn Series Win with DH Split
Hickory, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team split a doubleheader with Lenoir-Rhyne Sunday afternoon at Bears Field to pick series win in their South Atlantic Conference opener. Brevard rallied to win the first game 5-4 in eight innings before falling 12-6 in game two.
Game One - Brevard 5, Lenoir-Rhyne 4 (eight innings)
Eric Renegar broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI groundout to lead the Tornados to the win in the first contest, guaranteeing BC a series win after the Tornados took Friday’s opener 5-3.
Brevard's Chad Funkhouser drove in two runs as the Tornados rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the win. The sophomore put the Tornados up 1-0 in the top of the 1st with an RBI groundout and later singled in a run in the 5th to tie the game at 3-3.
The Bears forced extra innings when sophomore third baseman Landon Elks came through with a run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Elks drove in a pair of runs in the contest.
Bennett Hixson (W, 2-0) picked up the win in relief, while Alex Litaker pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his first save of the season.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 12, Brevard 6
Brevard took a 6-5 lead with a four-run 6th inning before Lenoir-Rhyne posted seven runs in their half of the 6th to avoid the sweep.
Lenoir-Rhyne outfielder Ivan Vieitez finished with three hits including a solo home run while driving in five runs.
A bases-loaded walk to freshman catcher David Martin proved to be the game-winner for the Bears, who snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
Hall finished with three hits and Elks drove in two more runs to lead the Bears offensively while L-R junior Casey Liles (W, 1-0) was credited with the win.
Christian Christopolous finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI to lead the Tornados.
Ryan Mercer (L, 0-2) took the loss, surrendering two runs (one earned) without recording an out in the 6th.
Brevard visits Erskine on Tuesday afternoon for a single game with the Flying Fleet at 2:30 p.m.
