Zaveta and Pickett Named January Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month
Brevard, N.C. – Erica Zaveta of the women’s cycling team and Dominique Pickett of the men’s basketball team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for January. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Zaveta was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over Micheala Watkins and Shelby Wolfe of the women’s basketball team.
Zaveta wins her second career Athlete of the Month award after leading the Brevard College Cycling team to a Division II Cyclocross National Championship. Zaveta’s first place finish represented the highest individual finish in the tie breaker with Mars Hill College, giving BC sole possession of the National Title.
Pickett was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over teammate Miles Leather and Cypress Gorry of the men’s cycling team.
Pickett is a first time winner after leading the Tornados offense with 16.8 points per game in January. The redshirt junior scored a career-high 31 points against Newberry on January 23rd, shooting10-of-16 from the field and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. Pickett also led the Tornados in scoring (23 points), assists (5) and rebounds (8) on January 30th against Carson-Newman.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2012-2013 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
