BC Downs Wingate With Strong Second Half
Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College women’s basketball team scored a season-high 80 points en route to their 80-67 South Atlantic Conference victory over the Wingate Bulldogs in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Brevard (6-18, 4-12 SAC) snapped their four-game slide by shooting a season-best 54.9 percent (28-for-51) from the floor against the Bulldogs (12-14, 6-10 SAC).
Freshman Tuccoa Brackett led all scorers with 22 points for the Tornados. Sophomore Taylor Hiatt dropped a career-high 20 points after going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Michaela Watkins and Shelby Wolfe each contributed 15 for BC.
The game was tied 30-30 at the half, and the two teams went back and forth for the first few minutes of the second half. With the game tied 39-39 with 15:32 remaining in the game, the Tornados used a 20-6 run to push their lead to 17 on a Brackett layup with 6:11 left.
BC's lead didn’t dip below 12 for the rest of the contest.
The Bulldogs were up 28-21 after a Chantal Dunbar jumper at 5:04 in the first half before Hiatt scored nine unanswered points to put the Tornados ahead 30-28 lead with 2:13 left before the break.
Dunbar paced Wingate with 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Sarah Wollett added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Janitsha Williams contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Bulldogs.
The Tornados visit first-place Anderson for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday as they fight for a spot in the SAC Tournament. The Trojans narrowly escaped Boshamer Gymnasium with a 57-54 victory when the two teams met on January 26th.
