Tornados Compete in the Mid-South Classic
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Brevard College Tornados softball team competed in the Mid-South Classic softball tournament over the weekend, falling to North Georgia 9-8, Columbus State 7-1, and Mansfield 5-4.
Game 1 (Friday): North Georgia 9, Brevard 8
The Tornados had 12 hits in the contest, paced by Emily Boykin’s two hits and three RBI’s, but it wasn’t enough for the Tornados to overcome a five-run 6th inning for North Georgia.
BC took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning after falling behind 4-2 early in the game. Boykin doubled in a pair of runs in the 1st inning and another in the 3rd to put the Tornados within a run.
Later in the 3rd, Kayla Clemens scored on a wild pitch to tie the game before Michelle Ray drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Jamie Hrobak singled in a run to put BC up by two.
After the Saints rally in the 6th put them ahead 9-6, BC answered with two runs in the bottom of the 6th but couldn’t find the equalizer.
Game 2 (Sunday): Columbus State 7, Brevard 1
The Cougars took a 5-0 before a Brittany Tucker solo homer put BC on the board in the 4th, but the Tornados couldn’t get any more offense going against Columbus State’s Kristen Carr (W, 2-1).
BC starter Kayla Clemens (L, 2-4) allowed three runs in the top of the 1st, and a Tornado fielding error led to a pair of unearned runs in the 3rd. The righty allowed four earned runs over on six hits and walk over five innings before Hrobak came in for the final two innings.
Game 3 (Sunday): Mansfield 5, Brevard 4
Brevard’s Kacey Brooker jacked a two-run homer, her second of the game, in the bottom of the 7th make it a one-run game. BC then put runners on first and second with one out, but the back-to-back groundouts ended the Tornados comeback.
Hrobak (L, 3-4) tossed a complete game for the Tornados, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.
Mansfield had taken an early 3-0 lead before back-to-back solo homers by Brooker and Alyssa Miller started the 3rd and made it a 3-2 game.
The Tornados return to action on Wednesday March 6th as they visit Lander for a doubleheader.
