Tornados Struggle Against Nationally-Ranked Indians
Salisbury, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados baseball team dropped a 13-0 decision to 25th-ranked Catawba College in their series opener with the Indians at Newman Park on Friday night.
BC starter Kevin Hamilton (L, 4-1) struck out the side in the 1st, but couldn’t escape the 2nd inning as the Indians tagged the righty for seven runs (four earned) over 1.2 innings. The junior recorded all five of his outs via the strikeout, but allowed four hits and three walks. The Tornados also committed two errors in the 2nd that led to the three unearned runs.
Alex Litaker, who got the final out of the 2nd, combined with reliever James Phillips to keep Catawba off the board through the 4th before the Indians scored six runs over the next three innings to go up 13-0 after seven innings.
Phillips was charge with a run in the 5th before Ryan Mercer surrendered three runs on three hits without recording an out in the 6th inning. The final two runs (one earned) were charged to Zach Joyce, who relieved Mercer in the 6th.
The Tornados picked up six hits but weren’t able to move a runner past second base against three different Catawba arms, namely starter Nick Lomascolo (W, 5-1). The lefty fanned nine Tornados over seven innings while allowing five hits and walk.
The Tornados and Indians will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Newman Park on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
