Brevard Swept by Mars HillMarch 9, 2013
Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados softball team was swept by the Mars Hill College Lions to open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 and 7-3 in a doubleheader.
Mars Hill's Robyn Stanek had three hits and drove in three runs for the Lions, while Taylor Jordan and Shaundee Woosley each added a pair of RBI’s for MHC. Michelle Ray drove in two runs to pace Brevard. Mars Hill improved to 9-5 overall and opens the SAC season 2-0. Brevard is now 7-14 overall and 0-2 in SAC play.
Game One: Mars Hill 4, Brevard 3
The Lions scored four unanswered runs and fended off a late Brevard rally to earn the 4-3 victory.
Taylor Morris singled with two outs in the second and came around to score on an error to put the Lions on the board. MHC added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Stanek to make the score 2-0.
Morris started the next Lion rally with a single to lead off the fourth. Jordan doubled in the run to make the score 3-0.
Once again, Morris started the MHC rally in the sixth with a single with the last of her three hits on the day. A sacrifice bunt by Jordan moved Morris into scoring position. Woosley’s RBI-single to left-center brought in Morris to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.
Brevard rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A Heather Morris RBI-single cut the score to 4-1. Ray’s two-run single cut the MHC lead to one, but Mars Hill’s Morris was able to work out of a first and second, one out jam with a strikeout and fly out.
In addition to her three hits, Morris worked a complete game in the circle to earn the victory. She scattered five hits and struck out four to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Freshman Jamie Hrobak was tagged with the loss for BC.
Game Two: Mars Hill 7
Brittany Gibson, Ashley McCurry, Stanek, Aleshia Peek, Jordan and Woosley all had two hits to help MHC to the 7-3 victory.
Mars Hill jumped all over Brevard early with a four-run first. Stanek doubled home Gibson and McCurry with a double to get the Lions on the board. Peek added an RBI-single before Jordan doubled home Peek to make the score 4-0.
Brevard came back with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI-singled by Emily Boykin and Brittany Tucker.
An RBI-triple by Jamie Hockaday in the top of the second made the score 5-2 in favor of the Lions.
A two-run sixth extended the Mars Hill lead to five. Woosley brought in a run with an RBI-hit, while Gibson added an RBI-single later in the inning to make the score 7-2.
Brevard added their final run in the bottom of the sixth when Tucker scored on an error.
Taylor Hussey worked six innings to keep her record perfect at 5-0 on the season. She surrendered one earned run and struck out one. Allie Carrigan pitched a scoreless seventh for MHC.
The Tornados return to action as they visit Anderson for a doubleheader on March 13th.
