Tornados finish home season with victory over Crusaders, 2-0
Toivanen and Halonen record goals, Hatsady gets second shutout of season
Brevard, N.C. - Senior day was a joyous occasion for the Brevard College men’s soccer team as they capped off senior Kyle Hamilton’s final home game with a victory over the visiting North Greenville Crusaders, 2-0.
For the season the Tornados improve to 5-13-1, 1-6 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Crusaders fall to 5-9.
The teams remained scoreless through the first half although both teams did have their chances. The defenses stood up to the attacks though as the Tornados and keeper Jerry Hatsady faced nine shots in the first half, but only one of those were on target with Hatsady making an easy save. Nick Williams faced two shots in the first half and didn’t have to record a save as both went wide of the net.
The breakthrough for the Tornados came in the 54th minute when reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, Jussi Halonen, took a free kick off a Crusader foul outside the box by goalkeeper Nick Williams. Halonen’s shot blasted through the wall of Crusader defenders into the left back corner of the net to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.
As time was running out and the Crusaders pressed forward, the Tornados struck again. A ball was cleared up to Villie Toivanen who touched a pass to lead teammate Ryan Ayers across the field. Ayers led Toivanen down the field with a perfect pass, and after he collected the ball, slipped the ball past a charging Williams into the back of the net in the 89th minute to ice the game.
For the game, the Tornados were outshot by the Crusaders 19-11. Five Tornado shots were on target and Williams made three saves. Hatsady faced seven shots on goal and made seven saves in recording his second shutout of the season.
The Tornados are on the road this weekend as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. on Saturday, October 28, to take on Catawba College with a conference tournament berth at stake. Kickoff for the game is slated for 4 p.m. The Crusaders are also on the road on Saturday as they travel to Georgia to take on Emmanuel College for the conclusion of their season.
