Tusculum Takes Series

Greeneville, Tenn. - The Tusculum College baseball team swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from the Brevard College Tornados Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park, taking a 15-3 win in the opener before edging BC 5-3 in the night-cap to take the series.

Game 1: Tusculum 15, Brevard 3
The Pioneers collected 16 hits in the opener, led by Trey Drewery’s 3-for-4 performance while Zeke McGranahan tossed eight innings for the win.

Champ Stuart led off the game with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Proffitt’s RBI single up the middle.

The Pioneers tied the game in the third inning at 1-1.  Foster reached on an error and moved to second on a Nick Rodriguez bunt single.  Foster scored the tying run on a dropped fly ball to right field.

Tusculum took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and added four more in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead.

The Tornados got two runs back in the top of the seventh thanks to Stuart’s two-out single, scoring Bennett Hixson and John Slade to make it a 7-3 ballgame.

But TC followed with three runs in the bottom of the inning and five more in the eighth to put the game out of reach for BC.

TC starter Zeke McGranahan tossed eight innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits  and a walk.

BC starter Brennan Daniels (1-3) suffered the loss for the Tornados, giving up five earned runs over 4.2 innings.

Game 2: Tusculum 5, Brevard 3
Jalen Shuffler went 2-for-3 while reliever John-Austin Shepard pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings to record his fifth save in TC’s 5-3 win in the night-cap.

TC starter Adam Sigmon (4-2) picked up his fourth victory of the year, giving up three runs over 4.1 innings.

Stuart got things going again for BC in game two, leading off the game with a double down the left field line and scoring on Renegar’s bunt single.

The Piooneers took the lead with a three-run second inning.

Trailing by two, Brevard cut the deficit in half with a run in the third.  Renegar drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a Cody Queen double.  After a groundout, Slade sent a fly ball down the right field line that was hauled in by Drewery, but Slade tagged up and just slid in under the tag by catcher Pat Holleran to make it a 3-2 contest.

Tusculum added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth as the Pioneers after a BC error and a base hit  increased the lead to 5-2.

The Tornados got a run back in the fifth inning as Renegar led off  with a double and scored on Kody Spencer’s one-out single.

BC starter Nick Blackwood suffered the loss as he went 1 2/3 innings with four hits, three runs a walk and a strikeout to fall to 1-3.  Stuart and Renegar would finish with two hits each in the loss for the Tornados.

The Tornados are back in action when they visit Winston-Salem State for a nonconference game with the Rams on March 19th at BB&T Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
