Brevard College Finishes Third at Road National ChampionshipsMay 6, 2013
Ogden, Utah- The Brevard College cycling team earned a third place finish in the Overall Team Omnium at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships this past weekend.
Brevard College, led by Erica Zaveta’s second place finish in the Overall Individual Omnium, finished just 21 points behind second-place Colorado Mesa University. The Tornados compiled 307 points over the event’s six races.
BC edged fourth-place Mars Hill College by just two points, while The Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the Overall Team Omnium after compiling 428 points.
Zaveta finished third in the Women’s Road Race, only 31 seconds behind winner Mackinzie Stanley of Whitman College. Zaveta also took seventh in the Individual Time Trial.
The Tornados placed two riders in the top five in the Men’s Road Race as Nick Jowsey took third and Lewis Gaffney captured fifth. The two BC riders finished just one second apart.
Brevard College also had a strong showing in the Criterium with Caleb Welborn leading the way in 12th place. Teammates Brandon Milet and Lewis Gaffney placed 29th and 35th, respectively.
Overall, 400 riders from more than 100 schools around the country competed in the event.
After finishing third at Road National Championships, the Tornados will prepare for the 2013-2014 season as reigning National Champions in Mountain Biking and Cyclo-cross.
