BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College freshman Rhem Stubbs nailed a header in the 116th minute to secure a Tornado victory, 2-1, against Erskine in double overtime Saturday at Brevard College Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.

The Tornados shook the frustration of the Flying Fleet by defeating the squad for the first time in four seasons. BC (1-0-0) won its opener for the first time since at least 2008 while Erskine fell to 0-2-0 on the young 2013 campaign.

“It is a really sweet victory,” said head coach and BC Athletic Director Juan Mascaro. “Every victory is sweet in soccer, but it’s always great to win the first game.”

Stubbs put the Tornados on the board in the 40th minute when he received a pass from Ryan Mcphillips and rocketed a shot past Erskine goalkeeper Drew Corcoran.

However, the Flying Fleet responded quickly by tying the match 27 seconds later when Jonathan Rutter bested BC goalie Heath Turner from 30 yards out following a pass from Peter Savarese.

Neither team mustered many scoring opportunities until Erskine fired three shots in a span of six seconds, but Turner and the Tornado defense stonewalled all of them to keep it tied.

In the second overtime, Alec Goettl sent a long feed, following a foul, into Stubbs, who headed in the game-winner in the 116th minute and amassed his second goal in his first collegiate game.

“I’m blessed. I have to give credit to my guys. It was a great game,” said Stubbs on his collegiate debut. “We applied a lot of pressure. To have two goals in my first game…I’m pretty ecstatic.”

Turner made 11 saves in his collegiate debut for the Tornados. Erskine outshot BC, 22-17 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2.

The Tornados look to win consecutive matches for the first time since 2010 when they travel to Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C. Wednesday at 4 p.m.
