BC Women Place Fourth, Men Claim Sixth at Furman InvitationalSeptember 14, 2013
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Brevard College freshman Caroline Christensen and senior Josh Mower lead their respective teams while the Tornados participated in the Furman Invitational Saturday morning in Greenville, S.C.
The women’s team impressed with a fourth place finish after Christensen finished the 6K in 23:37.99 to earn a 13th place finish. Hannah Cook enjoyed a top-20 performance when she completed the course in 23:58.24 to claim 18th.
“The women are still searching for their team identity. With a young group like this it will take a few meets until they gain some traction, learn the ropes, and gain the confidence to race on par with their talent level,” said first-year head coach Adam Malloy. “If we can learn and improve each week, we will be in a great position for postseason meets.”
For the second week in a row, Josh Mower paced the men’s squad with a 30th place finish when he covered the 8K in 26:33.26. Freshman Marc DeLisle continued to impress after finishing 32nd with a time of 26:43.49.
The men finished in sixth with 175 points while Mount Olive took home the crown after five runners finished in the top 10.
“The men ran very disciplined early in the race and it led to great final results. All but Patrick Helmick, who is returning from an injury, met or exceeded life time personal bests,” said Malloy. “To finish as the sixth-best Non DI program is great for this point in the season. When I let the reigns off, they'll be ready to fly.”
The Tornados will enjoy a bye week
before returning to action on Sept. 28 when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to
participate in the Greensboro XC Invitational.
