Tornados Shutout at Lenoir-RhyneOctober 5, 2013
HICKORY, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados resumed South Atlantic Conference play with a 41-0 loss to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.
The Bears remained undefeated in conference play with the win, improving to 4-1 (3-0 SAC) on the year while BC falls to 1-4 (0-2) in 2013.
The Tornados played L-R tightly in the first quarter, surrendering only a field goal in the first 15 minutes of play.
Sophomore defensive back Jacob McCleery intercepted a pass from Bears quarterback Miles Freeman at the Brevard College six yard line to halt Lenoir-Rhyne’s opening drive.
Following a three-and-out on BC’s first possession, L-R kicker Zach Neumann capped an 18-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
The Bears scored on their opening drive of the second quarter thanks to a 73-yard touchdown pass from Freeman to Jarrod Spears to make it a two-score game.
The Tornados struggled to move the ball offensively against the Bears, giving L-R ample opportunities to pad their lead. BC collected only six first downs and 83 yards of total offense on the afternoon.
L-R added another touchdown two drives later and a field goal on their final possession of the first half to take a 20-0 lead into the half. The Bears found the end zone on their first drive after halftime, and never looked back on their way to the win.
Freeman threw for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Bears rushing attack collected 350 yards on the ground.
Brevard opens their conference home schedule on Saturday as they host the Mars Hill College Lions at Brevard Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m.
