BC Drops Heartbreaker at Mars Hill in Overtime, 3-2
BC notched two goals for the first time in a month
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Brevard College women's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second half, but fell in gut wrenching fashion in overtime to Mars Hill, 3-2, on a frigid Friday evening in South Atlantic Conference action at Belk Field in Mars Hill, N.C.
The Lions (3-10-2, 2-7-1 SAC) played in their fourth overtime match in their last five while snapping a three-match losing skid. The Tornados (3-11-1, 0-8-1 SAC) saw their winless streak reach 12 despite scoring two goals for the first time since Sept. 28.
"I'm absolutely proud of our girls and it was a great comeback," said head coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara. "I'm delighted how they came back and fought through 90 minutes and the overtime session."
Mars Hill's Alyssa Morris notched her first of two goals in the ninth minute when she received a through ball from Leah Taylor and squirted a ball through the right side.
In the 46th minute, Morris struck again when she buried a penalty kick to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
The Tornados wouldn't back down while Kaitlin Burns notched her third goal of the season off a free kick in the 65th minute to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
BC's Yuki Soga timed her team-high fourth goal perfectly when she blasted in a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to tie the match at 2.
Neither team could score in the final 17 minutes to send the match into overtime. It marked the third time this season the Tornados played an extra session.
In the 99th minute, the Lions Megan Stabile corralled a loose ball following a rebound and squeaked the golden goal past goalkeeper Brittany Webster to clinch the Mars Hill victory.
Webster impressed while she racked up a season-high 12 saves while the offense accumulated a season-high 16 shots. The Lions finished the evening with 21 shots while netminder Tori Stajduhar stopped six shots.
BC's Burns and the Lions Morris paced their respective offenses with six shots.
The Tornados return to action when they welcome Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday for a South Atlantic Conference match at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.
