Brackett Earns Preseason All-SAC, BC Opens Season Saturday

BC travels to Western Carolina for an exhibition game Saturday

BREVARD, N.C.- Reigning South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year Tuccoa Brackett was tabbed to the Preseason All-SAC Second Team while the Brevard College women’s basketball team begins its 2013-2014 campaign with an exhibition game at Western Carolina Saturday.

Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C. at the Ramsey Center.

Brackett became the only Tornado in school history to earn all-conference recognition in the sport while averaging 15.2 points and 5.6 rebounds while pacing the squad with 30 blocks. The Marion, N.C., native led the team in scoring on 12 occasions while producing seven games of at least 20 points. Brackett’s season-high 23 came against Newberry (Jan. 23) and Anderson (Feb. 27).

“Tuccoa is a hard worker and is very deserving of this recognition. She has made a major impact on our program since the day she walked through the door,” said head coach Shannon Reid. “The young lady is a winner and we will count on her to lead us throughout this season as we make a push towards postseason play.”

The exhibition with the Catamounts, who finished ninth in the Southern Conference last season, is one of two exhibitions Reid’s squad will face. Her team finished 7-19, 5-13 SAC in the 2012-13 season.

BC will tangle with two other Division I programs, including a regular season match at Furman Nov. 12 and an exhibition game the next night at Coastal Carolina.

The Tornados welcome North Georgia Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. for their home opener at Boshamer Gymnasium.

The Tornados are entering their 6th season as members of the South Atlantic Conference and will take on a 22-game league schedule that includes conference newcomers Coker College and Queens University of Charlotte. BC travels to Anderson Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. to open up SAC play before welcoming Newberry Nov. 23.

BC will participate in the AT&T Hoops Classic in Anchorage, Alaska Dec. 20 & Dec. 21 before resuming conference play Jan. 4.

The longest road stretch comes from Jan. 15-Feb. 8 when BC plays six of eight on the road before returning home Feb. 12 to play four of its next six in Brevard.

BC returns eight letterwinners and two starters.  Shelby Wolfe, the other returning starter,  she averaged 6.5 points per game and tallied 26 steals last season.

The Tornados were picked to finish 11th in the conference’s 2013-2014 preseason coaches’ poll, it was announced by the league office Thursday.
