Vrvilo Sets New BC Record in Loss to Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.-The Brevard College volleyball team lost a closely contested match in four sets to the Newberry Wolves in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon despite a record-breaking day for the Tornados. The Wolves took the contest by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-23.

Freshman Aleksandra Vrvilo's 39 digs sets a new Brevard College volleyball record for digs in a match since BC joined the NCAA in 2007, eclipsing the standing record of 37. Former Tornados Rebecca Schoonover (2009) and Brittany Holliday (2007) both recorded 37 digs in five-set matches. Schoonover also held the previous record for digs in a four-set match with 35.

BC senior Erin Rollins led the way for BC with a career-high 15 kills, attacking at a team-high .429 hitting percentage. Sophomore Camille Cameron also tied her career-best mark for kills with 11.

The Tornados stormed out to 5-0 lead in opening set thanks in part to a pair of kills from Camille Cameron. Newberry eventually put together their own 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. The rest of the match was hard-fought, and the Tornados took a slight 22-20 advantage on a Newberry attack error followed by a Wolves setting error.

Newberry then called a timeout, and closed the set on a 5-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Tornados never trailed in a convincing set two victory. BC started strong in by gaining a 10-6 advantage and took their biggest lead at 22-17 on a kill by Rollins. A Newberry serving error clinched the win for BC to tie the match at one apiece.

Rollins contributed three kills to a 4-0 BC run to help BC rally from an early 4-1 deficit and tie set three at 9-9.  Newberry then engineered a 10-4 run to take a 19-13 lead. BC responded with a 9-5 run to pull within two before the Wolves sealed the win on a kill by Logan Hayward.

The two teams played close to even for the entirety of the fourth set, and the score was tied as late as 22-22. From there the Wolves took two of the next three points to seal the match win.

The Tornados return to Boshamer Gymnasium on Friday to play their final two home games of the 2013 season. The Tornados will host Coker on Friday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Day before the Wingate come to Brevard on Saturday afternoon.
