BC Falls at Anderson in Conference Opener, 90-54

ANDERSON, S.C.- The Brevard College women's basketball team jumped out to an early 16-9 lead, but was unable to sustain it while Anderson rallied back and eventually claimed a 90-54 victory in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday evening at the Abney Athletic Center in Anderson, S.C.

The Trojans (5-1, 1-0 SAC) earned their fifth consecutive victory while four players registered double figures. The Tornados (0-2, 0-1 SAC) dropped their sixth consecutive game to the Trojans despite knocking down seven of their first 10 shots.

Both teams exchanged buckets in the first 20 seconds before BC would rip off a 14-7 run thanks to a pair of Taylor Hiatt triples. Katie Williams got in the mix while she chipped in with a bucket, two rebounds and an assist in the first 5:50 of play.

BC stretched its lead out to five, 21-16, thanks to a three-pointer from Williams with 9:40 remaining in the opening half. However, AU responded with a strong 33-10 run to take a comfortable 49-31 lead into halftime.

The Trojans Jasmine Franklin chipped with 10 points in the first half while both teams combined for 19 assists. Anderson shot 47.2% (17-for-36) in the first 20 while BC shot 40% (12-for-30).

The Trojan defense clamped down and held the Tornados scoreless for the first 4:39 of the second half, but Hiatt knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a 60-33 game.

Anderson accumulated a 23-7 run in the second half while the Tornados struggled from the field, shooting only 10% (2-for-20) in the second half. 

BC wouldn't go down without a battle while it finished the game on a 10-2 run thanks to a pair of free throws from freshman Lynsey Crisp and a three-pointer at the buzzer from senior Chezney McJunkin.

AU shot 46.5% from the field in the game while knocking down six three-pointers. Jennifer Monroe led all scorers with 18 points and 10 boards while teammate Emily Willoughby finished with 12 points. Alexis Dillard and Franklin chipped in with 10 points each while Sierra Simpson dished out six of AU's 18 assists.

The Tornados were led by Hiatt with 14 points while freshman Chelsea Turner impressed with a team-high five rebounds. The BC defense forced 11 turnovers while the Trojans ended up with 10 steals.

BC returns to action Saturday when it welcomes SAC foe Newberry to Boshamer Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
