Second Half Struggles Upend BCDecember 4, 2013
BREVARD, N.C.-The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (4-2, 3-1 SAC) opened the second half on an 11-2 on their way to a 78-65 victory over the Brevard College Tornados (1-5, 1-3 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference action in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The run to open the second half broke a 36-36 tie at the break, and allowed Lenoir-Rhyne to maintain at least a six-point lead for the rest of the game.
L-R’s Jarvis Perry and Matt Kunz led the way with 14 points apiece, while five different Bears finished in double figures. Perry notched a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds and also dishing out a game-high seven assists.
Brevard started the game on a tear, jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the game’s first four minutes. Miles Leathers and Darius Moose each had four points during the hot start, in addition to a three-pointer from Dominique Pickett.
The Bears answered with seven straight points to make it a two-point game, but the Torandos were able to hold the lead until a four-point play by Lawrence Miller gave L-R a 17-16 lead at the 10:37 mark.
Manzey Miller eventually put BC back in front 21-20 with a three-pointer with 9:07 remaining in the half, and the Tornados stayed ahead until Lenoir-Rhyne's Jarrick Brown tied the game at 36-36 with a tip-in just before halftime.
The Bears ended the first half on a 10-2 run to force the tie going into the half, and carried the momentum into the second half.
Moose dropped in a game-high 19 points while Pickett and Trevon Shaw finished with 17 and 13, respectively. Moose also distributed a team-high six assists.
The Tornados are on the road this weekend as they travel to nonconference Fayetteville State for a 4 p.m. tipoff from Felton J. Capel Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos edged BC 69-67 in Boshamer Gymnasium last season.
