Tornados Fall to No. 27 Saint Leo in AT&T Hoops Classic Opener

ANCHORAGE, Alaska- The Brevard College women’s basketball team fell 69-42 to the No. 27 Saint Leo University Lions in the opening game of the AT&T Hoops Classic on Friday night in the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Saint Leo used 10 unanswered points to create distance midway through the first half after the Tornados defense gave Saint Leo problems in the early minutes. The Lions extended their lead to 27-12 going into the half.

The Lions added to their lead with an 11-2 run to open the second half and were able to keep the Tornados at bay for the rest of the contest.

Freshman Madison Lenox led the Tornados (2-6, 1-4 SAC) with nine points while Lynsey Crisp, Katie Williams and Shelby Wolfe each had eight points. Crisp pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

The Tornados struggled offensively though, shooting 20.3 percent (13-for-64) from the floor in the game.

The Lions (10-0, 1-0 SSC) had four scorers finish in double figures, paced by 15-point performances from Chelsea Williams and Teresa Manigrasso. Williams also brought down nine rebounds. 

Melissa Jackson and Chelsea Connelly both had 10 points and combined for 19 rebounds. Jackson recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Lions used size and depth in the interior to outrebound BC 55-37 and outscore the Tornados 12-6 in the paint. Nine different Lions grabbed a rebound in the game.

The outcome of the first-round game between the University of Alaska Anchorage and Cameron University will determine the Tornados opponent for Saturday’s game, which will tip at 9 p.m. EST from the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
