Last-Second Jumper Sinks BCFebruary 5, 2014
MARS HILL, N.C.- A jump shot from Mars Hill’s Kevin Haynes with 2.7 seconds left lifted the Lions to an 84-83 win over the Brevard College men’s basketball team on Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference action from Stanford Arena.
Haynes grabbed the long offensive rebound of a Devonte Williams missed layup to set up the game-winning shot, a fading jumper from the left wing. The sophomore finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Isaiah Cuthbertson paced the Lions with 17.
The Tornados (3-16, 3-12 SAC) inbound attempt following the Haynes go-ahead jumper was intercepted as the clock expired, allowing Mars Hill (4-16, 2-13 SAC) to escape on the narrowest of margins.
The Tornados had erased a 10-point deficit with 7:12 to play thanks to a 25-14 run that put the Tornados in front 83-82 after a pair of Trevon Shaw foul shots with just over 12 seconds to go.
Shaw was one of four Tornados to finish in double figures, going for 15 points along with a game-high nine rebounds and four assists. Darius Moose dropped a game-high 25 points for BC and added a game-high five assists.
Dominique Pickett had 20 points for the Tornados while Miles Leathers contributed 11 points in addition to seven boards and four assists.
The Tornados finish their three-game road trip on Saturday as they visit the Queens University Royals for a 4 p.m. tip inside the Levine Center.
