Tornados Bested by Walk-Off SingleFebruary 7, 2014
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson Newman’s Evan Kirkpatrick lined a walk-off single down the right field line in the bottom of the 9th to lift the Eagles to a 4-3 win over Brevard College in the 2014 South Atlantic Conference opener on Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
The Eagles (4-0, 1-0 SAC) tied the game in the 7th with an unearned run against Brevard (1-1, 0-1 SAC) starter Kevin Hamilton to set the table for the walk-off win. The righty didn’t allow an earned run in seven innings on the mound, scattering seven hits and a pair of walks but falling victim to three Brevard errors.
Freshman Tyler Konzen (L, 0-1) pitched a perfect 8th before hitting Peter Rajkovich to start the 9th. Rajkovich moved to second base on a walk and then scored the game-winning run on the Kirkpatrick single.
The Tornados rallied from a 2-0 deficit early, getting an RBI single from Eric Renegar in the top of the 4th to make it 2-1.
BC went in front 3-2 in the top of the 7th on a Bennett Hixson two-run single that plated Renegar and Kody Spencer. The Tornados had six hits in 6.1 innings against C-N starter Quinton Yocom, though they were held hitless over the final 2.2 innings by Eagle relievers Lucas Watson and Daniel Sharp (W, 1-0).
The Tornados will finish out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
