BC Swept at Carson-Newman

BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College baseball team (1-3, 0-3 South Atlantic Conference) was swept by the Carson-Newman Eagles (6-1, 3-0 SAC) in a doubleheader at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles won the first game 5-1 before a walk-off two-run homer lifted C-N to a 5-4 victory in game two.

The Eagles clinched the series sweep after taking the opener 4-3 on Friday afternoon with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th.

Game 1: Carson-Newman 5, Brevard 1
Carson-Newman took a 2-0 lead against BC starter James Phillips (L, 0-1), who allowed four earned runs over six innings on the mound. The lefty yielded eight hits and three walks while striking out six Eagles.

Kody Spencer made it a 2-1 game in the top of the 4th with a sacrifice fly that scored Brock Helton, but the Tornados couldn’t get any more runs across against C-N starter Vince Apicella (W, 2-0).

The Eagles added three more in the bottom of the 7th on a two-run double by Bo Ausmus, who later scored on a BC throwing error.

Game 2: Carson-Newman 4, Brevard 3 (8 innings)
Carson-Newman’s Joe Tipton hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 8th inning off BC reliever Bennett Hixson (L, 0-1) to give the Eagles the three-game series sweep.

Hixson got two quick outs in the 8th before issuing a walk and then allowing the Tipton homer. The Tornados had scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th on a wild pitch.

BC took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 5th when Hixson scored on a passed ball. Carson-Newman quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the 6th on a Tipton RBI single.

Aaron Goforth doubled down the right field line to leadoff the game, and scored on a Fisher RBI groundout after advancing to 3rd on a wild pitch.

The Eagles answered with a run in the home half of the bottom of the 1st to make it a 1-1 ballgame. BC starter Zach Joyce limited the Eagles to just one run over the next six innings, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work.

The Tornados look to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon as they host Limestone College in nonconference action. First pitch from Gil Coan Field is slated for 2 p.m.
