BC Splits with Mars HillMarch 1, 2014
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Mars Hill Lions at Henderson Field on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-3 in game one before plating three in the 9th inning of game two en route to a 6-4 win.
Game 1: Mars Hill 6, Brevard 3
Mars Hill took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the 5th on a pair of hits and a BC fielding error. Hunter Boydston (S, 2) pitched a scoreless 9th after the Lions added two more runs in the 8th to take a three-run lead.
Brevard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st when Chip Helton scored on a throwing error after reaching on a walk. Mars Hill answered with two runs in the bottom of the 1st when Nick Villalobos knocked a two-run double.
BC’s John Slade tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd with an RBI double, and scored the go-ahead run on Chad Fisher’s sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game.
Brevard College starter Zach Joyce (L, 1-1) was charged with four runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking two.
MHU's Caleb Edwards (W, 3-1) held BC to two runs over seven innings while striking out one Tornado.
Game 2: Brevard 6, Mars Hill 4
BC scored three runs in the top of the 9th to take a 6-3 advantage before BC righty Carson Anderson (S, 1) worked around a leadoff double in the 9th to hold on for the Tornados.
Chad Fisher walked to start the 9th and moved to third on a single up the middle by Aaron Goforth. Andrew Altamira’s fielder’s choice groundball scored Fisher to give BC a one-run lead.
Kody Spencer singled in Goforth to make it 5-3 before Altimira scored on Slade’s RBI groundout to put BC in front 6-3.
Hunter Donaldson (W, 1-1) struck out two batters in the 8th to strand a pair of runners on base after the Lions tied the game at 3-3 against lefty reliever Kyle Pittman.
Andy Runion (L, 0-2) was charged with three runs (two earned) in the 9th inning.
The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Limestone College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
