BC Races at the Charlotte 49er ClassicMarch 23, 2014
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s and women’s track & field teams traveled to Charlotte for a two day meet at the Charlotte 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track.
Josh Mower was had the highest finish of the meet for the Tornados, taking 5th place overall with a 9:29.82, which is currently the 10th fastest in NCAA Division II this season.
The women struggled to find their way out of the preliminary rounds while competing against several schools and about 80 different opponents. The first preliminiaries to take place were for the 100M, Litahni Brown finished at 13.52 while Kadijah Watts was at 13.80. The last qualifier for that round ended at 12.03. Brown also competed in the 200 M at 27.62 as teammate China Davis finished a second behind at 28.52. Watts came in at 29.25 during the same 200 M while freshman Savannah Cox finished with 30.45.
The women found luck during the distance running at 1500 M as Heidi Kaartinen led the Tornados at 5:16.03. Angela Canale ran a 5:32.90 while Elena Raygoza and Madison Smith finished third and fourth for Brevard. Ashley Lowe competed in the 3000 M for BC against 29 other opponents finishing at 12:11.90.
The men's preliminaries over the weekend started off slow but excelled through the meet. Josh Grinstead and Rufus Jenkins finished in the 82nd and 88th spots for BC during the men’s 100 M, even though their times were just a second from qualifying. Grinstead finished the 200 M at 24.08 while Kayce Martin trailed .30 behind at 24.38.
Chris Shore competed in the 1500 M against 111 other runners and finished with a time of 4:21.34. Teammate Jordan Tager stepped on the track for the 5000 M ending at 15:47.10 as teammate Marc Delisle came in at 16:08.28.
Brevard will travel to Raleigh for the Raleigh Relays beginning on Friday, March 28.
