Tornados fall in SAC Opener, 98-57December 6, 2008
Greeneville, Tenn. - Riding a two-game winning streak, the Brevard College women’s basketball team entered South Atlantic Conference play on the road against Tusculum College on Saturday afternoon. The Tornados were led by Amanda Whitaker’s 14 points, but ultimately fell to the #14 ranked Lady Pioneers, 98-57.
Brevard remains winless away from the friendly confines of Boshamer Gymnasium as they fall to 2-4 on the season, 0-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lady Pioneers improve to 7-1, 1-0 in the conference.
Tusculum jumped ahead early, taking a 9-4 lead four minutes into the contest. A three by Brevard’s Amber Roberts narrowed the Lady Pioneer lead, but Tusculum went on an 18-2 run on their way to building a 56-28 lead at the half.
The Lady Pioneers dominated the paint against the Tornados in the first half, scoring 34 points to Brevard’s two. The fast-paced game also affected the Tornados play as they turned the ball over 12 times to the Tusculum’s seven. Coach Shannon Reid’s squad shot 19.2 percent from the field in the first half, compared to the Lady Pioneers 55 percent.
At the half, the Tornados were led by Amanda Whitaker with nine points and five rebounds. Lindsay Brendle showed a hot hand for the Tornados, connecting on all of her shots in the first half in recording seven points. The Lady Pioneers were led by Ashli Oliver with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Anna Schlobohm and Kelly Hudler came out of the break firing for the Tornados with Schlobohm recording eight points in the second half, with Hudler adding seven. However, the Lady Pioneers rallied behind Oliver’s 11 second half points to take the win, 98-57.
The Tornados shot 26.3 percent (15-57) for the game, while Tusculum connected on 54.2 percent (39-72) of their shots. Points inside proved to be the difference of the game as Tusculum was able to record 58 points inside the paint to Brevard’s six. Brevard was able to convert their attempts from the free throw line as the Tornados went 20 of 24 from the charity stripe, outshooting Tusculum 83.3 percent to 72.2 percent (13-18).
Brevard was led offensively by Whitaker’s 14 points and four assists. Whitaker was joined in double figures by Schlobohm’s 13 and Brendle’s 11. Samantha Winn ruled the boards for Brevard in recording nine rebounds for the contest.
Tusculum was led by Oliver’s 23 points and nine rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Catherine Hintz (12) and Nikki Van Dine (10). Jasmine Gunn led the offensive attack with seven assists.
The Tornados will take a week off for exams before heading to Gaffney, S.C. on Thursday, December 18th, to take on Limestone College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tusculum stays at home as they host Livingstone College on Saturday, December 13, with a start time of 8 p.m.
