Tornados Fall in Opening Round, Turn Sights to Game Two

HARROGATE, Tenn.- The Brevard College softball team fell 6-0 to the Wingate Bulldogs in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Championship at Dorothy Neely Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Tornados now wait on the outcome of the Anderson vs. Carson-Newman game this afternoon to determine their opponent for tomorrow’s elimination game.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the 1st and another in the 3rd against Brevard starter Jamie Hrobak (L, 16-9), before a three-run 4th pushed their lead to five runs.

The Tornados struggled against All-SAC First Team pitcher Stacey Houser (W, 22-7), who limited the Tornados to three hits in the complete-game performance. The righty struck out four and issued one walk.

The Tornados had runners in scoring position in three different innings, but couldn’t find the timely hit against Houser. Emily Boykin, Casey Whitaker, and Lauren Parker all had singles for the Tornados.

Wingate added an insurance run in the 6th to go in front 6-0, and had 13 hits on the afternoon.

Regardless of the opponent, tomorrow’s game will be played at 12:30 p.m. at nearby Middlesboro High School, the tournament’s alternate site.
