Brevard College Announces 2008 Men's Soccer Schedule
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team’s 2008 schedule has been finalized, as announced by the BC athletics department in conjunction with head coach Juan Mascaro.
In 2008 the schedule is a challenging one as the Tornados will not only compete against the tough South Atlantic Conference foes, which had four teams go to the NCAA Division II Championships tournament in 2007, but BC will also play against NCAA Division II powerhouses Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, Belmont Abbey College, Clayton State University, North Georgia College, and NCAA Division I and Big South member Winthrop University.
The Tornados will open up the 2008 at slate on home on August 29, as they host Belmont Abbey. After the home opener, the Tornados will then hit the road for their next three matches, playing Coker College on August 31, Erskine College on September 3, and Warren Wilson College on September 6.
Coach Mascaro’s squad will then open up South Atlantic Conference play at home on September 10, when the Tornados will play host to Newberry College.
The Tornados next game will be on the road at Pfeiffer University on Saturday, September 13, before traveling to Hickory, N.C. to do battle with the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University on Tuesday, September 18.
Brevard then returns home to host the Eagles of Carson-Newman College on September 20, before traveling to Greeneville, T.N. on September 24 to take on the Pioneers of Tusculum College.
The next two matches for the Tornados are both non-conference home bouts, as BC welcomes Toccoa Falls to Brevard, N.C. on September 27 and then plays host to Queens University of Charlotte on October 1.
On October 4, the Tornados will travel to Mars Hill, N.C. to square off with the Lions of Mars Hill College in a SAC contest, which is followed by a road trip to Dahlonega, Ga. where BC will take on North Georgia College on October 7.
The Tornados will then take on Wingate University at home on October 11, before traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. where Coach Mascaro’s team will take on NCAA Division I member Winthrop University on October 15. This is the second straight year in which the Tornados have taken on the Big South member Winthrop University Eagles.
BC will continue its non-conference play over the next two matches, hosting Emmanuel College on October 18 and playing at Clayton State on October 21, before jumping back into SAC play on October 24 with a home contest against Lincoln Memorial University.
The Tornados wrap up their 2008 regular season play with a home contest versus North Greenville University on October 28 and a road match on November in Salisbury, N.C. against the Indians of Catawba College.
Brevard will then complete in the 2008 South Atlantic Conference tournament, their first year of eligibility, which will be held in Rock Hill, S.C. from November 7-9.
The Tornados are coming off a 4-14-1 season, where BC competed as a provisional member of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. While starters Fernando Sandoval, Owen Carson, Trevor Redpath and Ryan Mahaney are gone due to graduation, Coach Mascaro returns the core of the roster from a season ago, including returners Ian Townson, Kyle Stanforth, Kyle Hamilton, Douglas Neill, Niclas Stolt, Chris Maness, Alex VonSchulze and Miro Mustonen who all played in at least 12 games in 2007. Along with redshirt-freshman Henri Erti and a host of newcomers, the Tornados will look to again improve on their overall record as they head into their first year as an NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference member.
