ASHEVILLE — For many teenagers, choosing a college includes the decision to go far away from home, to begin the process of separation from family and spreading their wings toward adulthood.

For others — especially athletes — staying close by and allowing family and friends to share their college years is a rewarding experience.

At Brevard College, 13 members of the men's and women's basketball teams played at Western North Carolina high schools.

Their reasons for choosing the small, Division II program vary, but a constant is the comfort zone of having people they know and love in the stands.

"My family (two parents and a brother) come to almost every game. I think they've missed three my whole college career, and two of those were in Alaska," said junior Jonathan Whitson, the leading scorer and rebounder (18.9 points, 9.6 rebounds per game) on the men's team who played at Pisgah High.

"I love them being here. My family is close, and seeing them at every game makes me very happy."
