Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. – The Brevard men’s tennis team finished their weekend road swing with a victory, upsetting No. 36 Queens, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Brevard (4-1, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference) earned their first victory over a nationally-ranked team this season, while Queens (0-3, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) remains winless.

Brevard won two of three doubles points. Cole Altizer (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jarred Fisher (Prime Rose East, South Africa) lost to Christian Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario) and Jonathan O’Rourke (Auckland, New Zealand), 8-4, but the Tornados won the next two flights. Andrew Thompson (San Antonio, Texas) and Konstantin Savelyev (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) doubled up Edwin Ramirez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Matthew Abramowitz (Scarsdale, N.Y.), 8-4 and Nate Lyles (Summerville, S.C.) and Heikki Riikonen (Kuopio, Finland) downed Patricio Calderon (Newmarket, Ontario) and James McKinzie (Austin, Tex.), 8-5.

The Royals won the three top-flight doubles points. Lee-Daigle defeated Savelyev, 6-1, 6-0, and O’Rourke beat Riikonen, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Ramirez took a three-setter over Lyles at the No. 3 spot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Brevard needed to win the final three singles matches for the upset, and they did just that. The No. 4 and No. 6 matches finished up first; Thompson beat Christopher Kennedy (Colorado Springs, Co.), 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth-flight, and Shane Apps (Alpharetta, Ga.) whipped Abramowitz, 6-1, 6-2.

That meant that the No. 5 match between Altizer and McKinzie would decide the overall winner. Altizer won, 7-5, 6-3, to secure the victory for the Tornados.

Brevard returns to the court next Saturday at Pfeiffer. Queens plays Chowan Sunday at noon.
