BC Women's Softball Sweeps Montreat in Season FinaleApril 22, 2008
Montreat, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s softball team wrapped up their 2008 season in style on Tuesday afternoon, as the Tornados swept the Lady Cavaliers of Montreat College. The Tornados stormed through the Lady Cavaliers in game one, winning 12-2. In game two BC held on for a 4-3 road win over Montreat.
Game 1: Brevard 12, Montreat 2 (6)
In the opening game of the double-header, the Tornados used 10 hits to plate 12 runs for the game, including a six-run fifth inning, to defeat the Lady Cavaliers 12-2 in six innings.
The Tornados got on the board first, pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning on a Jennifer Brown double to give BC the early 2-0 lead.
After adding a run in the top of the fourth by way of a bases load walk, the Tornados blew the game open in the top of the fifth as they plated six runs in the inning. Senior centerfielder Kristin Tettemer drove in two runs for the inning, while fellow classmate Amber Clontz drove in two more by way of a double in the gap. Sophomore Katie Brown and senior Lindsey Morgan would add back to back RBI doubles to help push the Tornados lead up to 9-0.
Montreat College got two runs back in the bottom half of the fifth inning, as designated hitter Mandi Pike had an RBI double and then later scored on a Mary Montgomery single.
However, the Tornados put the game away in the top of the sixth, as BC added three more runs highlighted by a Clontz double which drove in two runs on the play.
Sophomore starting hurler Jennifer Gift (6-18) shut down the Lady Cavaliers in the sixth to give BC the 12-2 win. Gift picked up the win as she gave up two runs on five hits while striking out seven hitters in six innings of work.
The loss went to Montreat’s Haven Payne, as the starter gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits in four innings of action.
At the plate, BC was led by Clontz, who was 3-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. Fellow senior Morgan was 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Jennifer Brown was 1-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Game 2: Brevard 4, Montreat 3
In their final game of the 2008 season, the Tornados used a three run seventh to pick up the 4-3 come back from behind victory over Montreat College.
Again BC jumped out to an early lead by scoring in their first at bat, as freshman Sarah Carlos drew a base-on-balls with the bases loaded to push lead-off hitter Beth Brooker across the plate from third and put the Tornados up 1-0.
However, Montreat College scored two runs in the bottom of the second by way of a Kerby Barkdoll double to give the Lady Cavaliers the 2-1 lead.
Montreat pushed their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, as again Barkdoll had an RBI double.
Yet the Tornados would not blow away, as the BC scored three runs on two hits and three Montreat errors in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.
Again Gift shut down the Lady Cavaliers in their final at bat to give BC the 4-3 win. Gift (7-18) picked up her second win of the day, as the hurler came into the game in the second inning to allow one run on seven hits while striking out seven hitters over the final 5.2 innings of play.
The loss went to Montreat starter Lacy Robinson, as Robinson gave up four runs, all unearned, on eight hits while striking out nine in seven innings.
Short-stop Kristina Clayton led the Tornados at the plate, as she was 4-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Brooker was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Katie Brown was 1-3 with a run scored.
The Tornados finished the season with a 13-27 record on the year, an 11 game improvement from a year ago.
