Brevard, N.C. – Tusculum College dominated the first game and rallied in the second to take a doubleheader from Brevard College, 16-6 and 6-5, Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados (6-10, 0-5 South Atlantic Conference) remain winless in SAC play.
Game 1 – Tusculum 16, Brevard 6
Tusculum scored in the game’s first three innings, including a six-spot in the third, and never took their foot off the accelerator.
Boo Morrow (2-3; Lexington, Ky.) took the win for the Pioneers, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five in six innings of work. Ryan Toney (1-3; Johnson City, Tenn.) took the loss for Brevard, allowing seven runs in two innings of action.
The Pioneers (12-7, 5-0 SAC) scored twice in the first frame as Ricky Feliz (Miami, Fla.) and Sean Cotten (Mooresville, N.C.) had run-scoring hits. Tusculum tacked on another in the 2nd when Payden Houser tallied an RBI single to make the score 3-0.
The Tornados got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd frame, when Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) launched a home run off of Morrow, his third of the season. The blast went an estimated 420 feet over the left field wall.
The first six Pioneers to come to bat in the 3rd inning eventually touched home plate. Sean Finucane (Cortland, N.Y.) led off with a single, and then Cotten drew a walk. Finucane touched home after a pair of wild pitches from Toney, then Ty Collins (Morristown, Tenn.) singled home Cotten to make the score 5-1. Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.) was hit by a pitch, bringing Jacob White (Elkin, N.C.) in to pitch for the Tornados.
Jared Richmond (Fort Smith, Ark.) greeted White while an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Collins, then Richmond and Kellinger both scored on a single from Houser. Feliz ended the damage with a double scoring Houser to make the score 9-1.
Tusculum added a run in the 5th, when Richmond homered to straight away center field.
Brevard scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) drilled a 1-1 pitch over the left center wall for a two-run bomb to cut the gap to 10-3.
Tusculum scored four more in the sixth, on an RBI single from Kellinger, a 2 RBI double from Richmond, and an RBI single from Aaron Hudgins (Kingsport, Tenn.).
Brevard scored in the bottom half of the inning, when Adam Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) singled to the opposite field, scoring William Scholer to make the score 14-4.
The Pioneers added a single run in the 7th on an RBI double from Cotten, but Brevard countered with a run in the 8th on a run-scoring single by Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.).
Both teams scored in the 9th, Tusculum on a double by Matt Ford (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Brevard on a double play groundout from Michael Calhoun (Florence, S.C.).
In a game full of offensive firepower, Richmond stood out, going 4-5 with a double, a home run and 4 RBIs.
Game 2 – Tusculum 6, Brevard 5 (7 inn.)
The Tornados built a 5-1 lead but could not hold on, as a two-out, two-run home run from Ford in the sixth inning capped the Pioneer comeback.
Michael Handley (1-0; Duluth, Ga.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief work for Tusculum to secure the win. Seth Laughter (1-1; Fletcher, N.C.) took the loss, allowing six runs in six innings of action. Rob Currie (St. Charles, Ill.) threw two innings of shutout ball to get his third save of the season.
Brevard struck first in the finale, with four runs in the 1st innings. All of the damage came with two out; after Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) singled and Corn reached on an error, Jason Merrill dealt the big blow with a two-run double. Scholer and Linn also had run-scoring singles as the Tornados took a 4-0 lead after an inning.
The first Tusculum marker came in the 3rd, when an RBI single from Hudgins scored Ford to make it 4-1.
Brevard came back with a run in the 4th, when Mullis singled home Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) to make the score 5-1.
The Pioneers put up three runs in the 5th to set up Ford’s game-winning blast. Two runs scored when Hudgins reached on an error by Tornado 2nd baseman Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.), and Feliz notched an RBI groundout later on to bring TC within one. The game-winner, of course, came In the next inning.
Ford was 2-2 and scored three times for the visitors, while Mullis had a good second game for the home nine, going 3-4.
Brevard and Tusculum will finish their SAC series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
