Brevard loses to Alderson-Broaddus, 8-6March 10, 2009
Bullpen does solid work, not allowing a run in 4 1/3 innings of work
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados were edged by visiting Alderson-Broaddus College, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon in diamond action at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados had the bases loaded with two out in the ninth but were unable to score.
Renato Lopez (San Leandro, Calif.) threw a staggering 129 pitches in eight innings of work and picked up the win for the Battlers (8-2). Lopez allowed six runs (two earned) and struck out eight while walking just one. Pedro Castellanos (Stockton, Calif.) pitched a roller coaster ninth but did not allow a run for the save. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) allowed eight runs (five earned) in four and two-third innings and took the loss to fall to 2-2. The senior struck out five batters.
The Tornados (6-12) struck first and hard, putting up a four-spot in the 2nd inning. Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.) brought home the first run with an RBI single up the middle, and two batters later Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) knocked home a pair with a single that hugged the right field line to make it 3-0. Warner scored the final run of the inning, on a double from Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.).
Alderson-Broaddus narrowed the gap in the 4th inning, scoring first on an RBI single from Damon Arnold (Wellsville, N.Y.) to get their first marker on the board. Two batters later, Ronnie Whitt (Hamilton, Ohio) scored on a Tornado error to make the margin 4-2.
The Battlers did most of their damage in the 5th frame. With the bases loaded and no one out, Zach Marshall (Lima, Ohio) cleared the bases with a double to the left-center gap, giving the road side their first lead of the day. Whitt followed with an RBI single of his own, and an RBI hit from Gary Valadez (Torrance, Calif.) and a sac fly from Mark Ruiz (Manteca, Calif.) made it 8-4 Alderson-Broaddus midway through the game.
The final Tornado runs came in the 8th inning. William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) led off the frame with a home run, his 2nd of the season. Two batters later, M.A. Dozier (Cumming, Ga.) singled; he eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-6.
Brevard loaded the bases in the final inning thanks to two Castellanos free passes and a single from Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.). But the Battler closer retired Dozier to end the game.
The bullpen was perhaps the highlight of the day for Brevard. Jacob White (Elkin, N.C.), Payne Parker (Florence, S.C.) and Luke Smithson combined to pitch four and one-third innings of scorless ball in relief of Linn.
The Tornados resume SAC play Friday night with a match-up at Lincoln Memorial, a 7 p.m. start. The Battlers stay in the Tar Heel State to face Mars Hill Wednesday at 3 p.m.
