Brevard rules over Division I North Carolina Central, 4-3
Tornados go undefeated on spring break excursion
Hilton Head, S.C. - The Brevard College Tornados scored their biggest win of the season to date on Thursday, beating NCAA Division I member North Carolina Central, 4-3, to conclude their spring break trip. Brevard (9-2) won all five matches on the trip.
The match was contested using Division I rules, where the three doubles matches combine to count for one point. The Eagles took that point by winning two of three pairs matches. Jack Waissen and Alejandro Espitia beat Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer in the top flight, 8-5, and the second court went to NCCU as well, as Trey Chatman and Andres Perez beat Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen, 8-4. The Tornados did take the No. 3 match, with Andrew Thompson and Nate Lyles beating Jermaine Byrd and Jose Fabara, 8-3.
The Tornados won the match on the strength of a fine showing in singles. Waissen beat Savelyev in the top flight, 7-5, 6-3, to score another point for the Eagles. But the Tornados won at the next two spots, with Riikonen beating Fabara, 6-1, 6-1 and Altizer rallying to beat Perez, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. North Carolina Central came back with a three-set win at No. 4, with Chatman downing Thompson, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-2, but Shane Apps tied it for Brevard at No. 6, beating Stephen Allsop, 6-1, 6-0.
The final match on the courts, and the deciding point, was the fifth flight. Brevard's Fisher was the victor, coming from behind to top Espitia, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The Tornados take a week off before returning to the court, when they face South Atlantic Conference rival Catawba at 2 p.m. NCCU faces Shaw next Tuesday at 1 p.m.
