Box Score

Harrogate, Tenn. – A masterful performance from Shane Galloway led the Brevard Tornados to a split with South Atlantic Conference rival Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon at Hennon Field. Brevard took the first game, 7-0, as Galloway tossed a shutout, and lost the finale, 9-5.

Game One – Brevard 7, Lincoln Memorial 0 (7 inn.)

Galloway (Rosman, N.C.) was dominant in leading Brevard (7-13, 1-7 SAC) to their first SAC win of the season. The southpaw scattered just five hits and struck out six to pick up his 2nd win of the season. Lincoln Memorial’s (15-12, 3-7 SAC) Josh Strawn (Bradenton, Fla.) gave up all seven runs to take the loss, his first of 2009.

The Tornados scored all seven runs in the 4th inning. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) led off with a single, and two batters later Josh Miller (Hendersonville, S.C.) also singled. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) brought home the first run with a single, and William Scholer doubled the lead with another RBI base hit.

With two out and Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) batting, Linn scored on an LMU throwing error. Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) then each came up with an RBI single. Both players scored a dropped fly ball off the bat of Corn to make the score 7-0.

The Railsplitters were never in a position to challenge Galloway and the Tornado lead again. The junior ace did strand runners in scoring position in each of the last three frames to maintain his shutout.

Game Two – Lincoln Memorial 9, Brevard 5 (7 inn.)

The Tornados jumped on LMU starter Sean Woolard (Parker, Colo.) for two runs in the first inning, but the ‘Splitter righty got some help from his offensive mates to rally for a 9-4 win. Woolard allowed three runs (two earned) in seven innings for the win, and struck out six Brevard hitters. Tornado starter Seth Laughter (Fletcher, N.C.) gave up five runs (two earned) in three and one-third innings to take the loss.

Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) got Brevard rolling with a two-run double down the right field line in the opening inning. Mullis and Pruitt came home to give the Tornados a 2-0 advantage. Merrill single-handedly added another run in the 3rd inning when he doubled, stole third and scored on an errant throw to put the road nine up by a trio.

After not scoring in the first nine innings of the day, Lincoln Memorial scored in the next four innings to come away with the win. Tommy Casto (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) got the home team on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd, and three batters later Nick Langley (Blaine, Tenn.) stroked an RBI single to make the score 3-2.

Lincoln Memorial grabbed the lead with a three-spot in the 4th. Casto brought home a run with an RBI double, John Couch (Bonnyman, Ky.) scored on a Brevard error, and Bryon Izzo (Miramar, Fla.) came through with a sac fly to make the score 5-3 Railsplitters.

Three more LMU runs came home in the 5th. Couch scored a pair with an RBI double and later scored on another Brevard error to put the home team up 8-3. One more Lincoln Memorial run scored in the 6th on a run-scoring to-bagger from Shane Kaufman (Miramar, Fla.).

Brevard mounted a brief rally in the 7th inning. Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) led off the frame with his second home run of the season, and Adam Arrowood brought a run to the plate three batters later to make the final score 9-5.

The Tornados take a day off before heading back to Tennessee on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game against Milligan. Lincoln Memorial plays at Limestone Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
