Lyles clinches as Brevard beats Lincoln Memorial, 5-4
Winning streak reaches seven
Brevard, S.C. – The Brevard Tornados kept rolling Saturday, beating Lincoln Memorial, 5-4, to claim their seventh straight victory and second straight SAC win. The match wasn’t decided until the final singles point, where Nate Lyles clinched the victory for Brevard.
The Tornados (11-2, 2-2 South Atlantic Conference) won two of three double points over the Railsplitters (3-5, 0-1 SAC). Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer lost to LMU’s Tom Goossens and Hannes Ganss, 8-5, but Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen beat Bastian Guenther and Zack Jones, 8-6 and the duo of Andrew Thompson and Lyles edged Andras Pauko and Gabor Szabo, 8-6.
In singles, the Railsplitters won each of the top two flights. Guenther topped Savelyev, 6-3, 6-0 and Ganss got past Riikonen, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. But the Tornados won at the third and fourth spots; Altizer beat Szabo, 6-4, 6-3 and Fisher downed Pauko, 6-3, 6-2. The fifth flight was LMU’s, as Goossens beat Shane Apps, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The sixth flight was the last to finish and Lyles was victorious to push Brevard over the edge, outlasting Jones 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The Tornados look to stay hot Wednesday with a 3 p.m. match against Mars Hill. LMU plays at Tusculum Wednesday at 3 p.m.
