Dice homers twice as Lenoir-Rhyne beats Brevard, 12-3March 22, 2009
Brevard's Scholer hits home run
Brevard, N.C. – Brian Dice homered twice and drove home three runs as Lenoir-Rhyne topped Brevard, 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The win completes a three-game sweep for the Bears in the South Atlantic Conference weekend match-up.
Greg Conrad (4-1; Charlotte, N.C.) picked up the win, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings of work while striking out nine. Trent Davis (Valrico, Fla.) pitched the final three innings for the save, his second of the year. Ryan Toney (1-4; Johnson City, Tenn.) pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing five runs (one earned) to take the loss.
Dice (Hickory, N.C.) and Chris Tucker (Hawthorne, N.Y.) each had three hits for Lenoir-Rhyne (20-6, 6-0 SAC), while Max Loveland (Bradenton, Fla.) drove home four runs. William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) hit a three-run home run to account for Brevard’s scoring, while Ben Pacey (Swain County, N.C.) had two hits.
The Bears struck with a five-spot in the top of the 1st inning. Loveland tallied an RBI groundout, Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.) scored on a Tornado error, Alex Cooks (Tampa, Fla.) scored on a passed ball and Dice jacked his first bomb of the day, a two-run shot, to make the score 5-0.
Two more Bears scored in the 2nd. Loveland doubled home a pair with two out to put the visitors up by a seven.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored four more in the 6th frame. Dice led off the inning with a home run, Rob Knight (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had an RBI double, Michael Pleau (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch and Loveland notched another RBI double to make the score 11-0.
Brevard (7-18, 1-10 SAC) scored all three runs in the bottom of the 6th. After Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) led off the inning with a walk and pinch hitter Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.) had a base hit, Scholer drove a 3-1 offering from Conrad over the left field fence, his third blast of the season.
The Bears scored once more, in the 7th, when Knight came through with an RBI groundout.
The Tornados return to the Gil Coan diamond Tuesday when they face North Greenville at 2 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne plays at Limestone Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
