BC Women's Tennis 2007-08 Season in ReviewApril 26, 2008
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s tennis team put together a very good season in their second provisional year as NCAA Division II members and first year as a South Atlantic Conference provisional member.
In 2007-08 the Tornados netted a 14-8 overall record, which included a five match winning streak on two different occasions. BC also posted a solid 6-5 record against NCAA Division II opponents, which included four wins over SAC foes on the season.
The Tornados jumped out of the gates this season, as a number of players had strong performances in the BC Mountain Invitational tournament in early September.
Brevard continued their strong play, posting a 3-0 record in the fall season including a win over SAC opponent Lincoln Memorial.
In the 2008 spring season, head coach Paul Thomson’s squad picked up where they left off in the fall, winning their first two matches of the spring as they defeated Emmanuel and Columbia College.
With a 5-0 start, the Tornados then dropped their next two matches; both against SAC opponents, before picking up a dominating 9-0 win over Converse College.
After dropping the next three matches, the Tornados traveled down to Hilton Head, S.C. for their spring break trip, in which BC posted a record of 2-2 for the week, moving them to 8-6 on the season with eight matches remaining.
BC then dropped a road contest to the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman before putting together their second five-match winning streak which included wins over Mars Hill, Maryville College and Wingate.
In their final home match of the season, the Tornados were edged out by the Lady Saints of North Georgia to fall to 13-8 on the season.
Yet BC bounced back to beat Lincoln Memorial for the second time this season in their last match of the year, completing their 2007-08 season with a 14-8 record.
The Tornados were led by freshman standout Lindsay Shaeffer (Perrysburg, Ohio), as the rookie posted a team-high 19 wins, all of them coming at the No. 1 singles position.
Fellow teammates Kayley Duval (Redding, CA), Kimberly Dixon (Charlotte, NC) and Merek Slagle (Hendersonville, NC) also finished the season with double-digit wins in singles play. Duval posted an overall record of 15-6 on the season, while Dixon posted a 14-7 record for the season, including going 12-7 at the No. 2 singles position. Slagle picked up 13 wins on the season, which was fourth on the team overall.
In doubles play, the Tornados posted a team season record of 35-30 on the year, with 15 of those wins coming by way of the BC tandem Shaeffer and Dixon at the No. 1 doubles position.
The Tornados duo of Kayley Duval and Kimberlee Cooper (Brevard, NC) also posted a winning record in doubles play, finishing the season with a record of 6-4 overall including going 4-1 at the No.3 doubles spot.
With only one senior leaving and all of the other players set to return for the 2008-09 season, the Tornados will look to build on this year, which had a lot of positive and exciting points throughout the year. Head Coach Thomson and Brevard College will look to the experience gained from this season as well as a number of good recruits to have the Tornados ready to compete day-in and day-out in 2008-09.
