Tornados taken down by Catawba, 8-6 and 7-1
Moman, Miller homer in first game
Brevard, N.C. – The Tornados of Brevard College fell twice on Saturday to Catawba College, 8-6 and 7-1. The Catawba Indians improve to 27-15 (15-4 SAC) with the two victories, while Brevard falls to 10-29 (2-18 SAC).
Game One – Catawba 8, Brevard 6
The first game was a home run slugfest, with Catawba belting four and Brevard two. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C.) was 4-4 for the Catawba Indians and belted his 10th home run of the season.
Alex Fairweather (4-2; Lenoir, N.C.) picked up the win, allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings, while Shane Galloway (3-6; Rosman, N.C.) was the losing pitching, giving up eight runs in seven innings. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, N.C.) recorded the final out of the game to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, N.C.) hit the first tater of the day, a two-run shot in the 1st inning that put Catawba up, 1-0.
The bulk of Brevard’s scoring came in the 1st. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) doubled home the first run of the day for the home team, and Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) followed with an RBI single to tie the score. Two batters later, Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) put Brevard on top with a two-run homer to deep centerfield, making the score 4-2.
Ryan Query (Kannapolis, N.C.) brought Catawba even with a two-run home run in the 3rd inning, and Lyerly launched a solo shot in the 4th to put the road nine on top. The big blast came in the 7th, as Josh Hohn (Greensboro, N.C.) blasted a three-run home run to make the score 8-4 Indians.
Brevard rallied on the strength of a two-run homer from Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) in the 9th inning but could get no closer.
Game Two – Catawba 7, Brevard 1 (7 inn.)
The finale was a pitcher’s duel until the 6th inning, when Catawba exploded for six runs. Trevor Mullins (4-3; Jamestown, N.C.) took the win, allowing just a run in six innings of work, while Seth Laughter (2-6; Fletcher, N.C.) gave up six runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Catawba scored first, as Query singled home a run to make the tally 1-0.
The good guys put up a run in the 2nd, when Miller scored Moman with an RBI groundout to tie the game.
The road team batted around en route to six runs in the sixth. Query and Lyerly each had RBI doubles in the frame, and Blair Underwood (Greensboro, N.C.) put up the big shot, a two-run single.
The Tornados and Catawba Indians will finish their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
