Tornado tennis to host SAC Quartefinal matches

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Brevard College men's and women's tennis teams will each host Quarterfinal matches in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Tornado men will host Tusculum on Monday, while the Tornado ladies will host Mars Hill on Tuesday.

Both Brevard teams are the #4 seed in their respective tournaments, and both matches will start at 3 p.m. The Tornado tennis teams are the first Brevard College squads to earn home postseason matches since the school joined the ranks of NCAA Division II.

Tusculum College, which went undefeated in conference play, received the No. 1 seed in next week’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament, where they will attempt to win their second straight tournament championship.

Tusculum (8-0 SAC, 16-4) is ranked 8th in the Southeast Region in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Tusculum will host eight-seed Lenoir-Rhyne (1-7 SAC, 1-16) University on Tuesday.

Carson-Newman College (7-1 SAC, 10-2) earned the second seed and will face seventh-seed Lincoln Memorial University (2-6, 7-12) in Tuesday’s quarterfinal action.

Wingate University (6-2, 11-7) is the third seed and will face sixth-seed Catawba College (3-5, 3-9) in a quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Brevard College (5-3, 15-5) is the fourth seed and will host fifth-seed Mars Hill College (4-4, 6-9) in another quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

The semifinals and finals will be held at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, April 24. The semifinals will begin at 1 p.m. The semifinal winners meet for the tournament championship at Noon on Saturday.

The tournament winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Tournament.

Wingate University, which went undefeated in conference play, received the No. 1 seed in next week’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament, where they will attempt to win their first-ever tournament championship.

Wingate (8-0 SAC, 11-4) is ranked 12th in the Southeast Region in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Wingate will host eight-seed Catawba College on Monday.

Newberry College (6-2 SAC, 7-7) earned the second seed and will face seventh-seed Lincoln Memorial University (2-6, 8-11) in Monday’s quarterfinal action. Newberry finished the regular season tied for second place with Mars Hill. Newberry won the tiebreaker by virtue of its early-season 5-4 victory over Mars Hill. Lincoln Memorial finished tied for seventh place with Catawba, but won the tiebreaker with its 5-4 victory over Catawba on Saturday.

Mars Hill College (6-2, 10-5) is the third seed and will face sixth-seed Carson-Newman (3-5, 3-9) in a quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Brevard College (5-3, 15-3) is the fourth seed and will host fifth-seed Tusculum College (4-4, 12-9) in another quarterfinal match on Monday at 2 p.m.
