Pioneers win five of six singles points
Brevard, N.C. - The fourth-seeded Brevard College Tornados were beaten, 5-4, by fifth-seeded Tusculum College Monday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Pioneers won five of six singles points after Brevard won all three doubles matches.
The Tornados went unscathed in pairs action, building a 3-0 lead. Cole Altizer and Konstantin Savelyev beat Drew Kiser and Thomas Rees, 8-3, in the feature match, while Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen followed with an 8-4 victory over Leo Guaycurus and Henrique Rodrigues. Andrew Thompson and Nate Lyles finished the sweep with an 8-6 triumph over Hunter Beal and Steven Lin at the third spot.
Altizer pushed the Tornados to the brink of victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Beal at No. 3 singles, but the Pioneers won the final five points to advance. Rodrigues beat Savelyev, 6-3, 6-1, in the top spot, while Rees downed Riikonen, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 on court two. Guaycurus beat Fisher, 7-5, 6-2, in the fourth spot, and Lin got past Thompson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
The final match on the court was the No. 6 singles duel between Kiser and Shane Apps of Brevard. The Pioneer fought through injuries and multiple match points to escape with the win, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
With the loss, the Tornados are eliminated from the tournament. The defending-champion Pioneers will face top-seeded Wingate Saturday in the Semifinals.
