Hovis' first collegiate goal leads to Tornado victory
Brevard defeats Montreat 1-0
Brevard, N.C. - Bailey Varley connected with Allie Hovis in the second half for the Tornados first goal of the season, capping off a team effort as Brevard opened the 2009 season with a win over Montreat College, 1-0.
Win the win Brevard moves to 1-0 in the 2009 season, while Montreat falls to 0-1.
The first half was scoreless, but hard fought. The Tornados’ defenders and midfielders were able to control the ball for most of the half, keeping the Cavaliers away from their goalkeeper, Sydney Douglas.
Montreat, however, was able to breakaway from Brevard’s defense twice to face Sydney Douglas one on one, but she stepped up to the challenge saving both shots.
In the first half, the Tornados offense attempted 10 shots with three being on target while Montreat attempted their only two shots of the game.
The Tornados finally found the back of the net with 23:24 left in the game, when Varley found Hovis breaking to the net. Hovis slipped the ball past a charging Cavaliers goalkeeper, Caroline Mellard, and put the ball in the back of the net for the Tornados first goal of the season.
Brevard’s defense completely shut down Montreat in the second half allowing no shots as Sydney Douglas recorded her first shutout of the season.
Hovis was able to get seven shots off with four of them being on target. The Tornados ultimately out shot the Cavaliers 21-3 in a game in which every Tornado player saw the field.
The team looks for another win on Saturday, August 29, when Anderson University travels to Brevard for a 1:00pm game.
