Brevard at Pikeville Game Notes
Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados football team opened up the 2009 season this past Saturday with a record-breaking win, shattering four school records against Edward Waters, as Brevard won their first season opener since the program was reinstated in 2006, 51-6.
Coach Hamilton's team broke school records in total yards (419), rushing yards (398), rushing touchdowns (6) and points scored (51) in the game.
Now, one week later, Brevard sets their sights on Pikeville College.
This will be the second meeting between the Tornados and the Bears. Brevard won the first meeting last season at Brevard Memorial Stadium on September 6th, 20-17.
Donald Hudson caught a 36-yard pass from quarterback Kye Hamilton and John Taylor had two rushing touchdowns, including a 44-yard jaunt up the middle. Pikeville quarterback Dan Wideman threw for 188 yards and one touchdown in the game, while receiver Nick Jamerson came down with six catches and 101 yards.
This season, the Tornados bring a focused rushing attack, led by two Feather River (Calif.) College transfers in quarterback Michael Crumbaker and fullback Neville Bryce.
Bryce, the offensive MVP in the first game according to the BC Sport Information staff, rushed for 192 yards on 14 carries, breaking a 65-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter to build the lead. Crumbaker's numbers were not as eye-catching, but the junior quarterback made several heads-up plays, including a jump pass to fullback Derek Church for a drive-saving first down and a fade to Justin Fleming down the left sideline, as well as directing the Tornados offense to a turnover-free day.
