Women finish seventh, men eighth
Spartanburg, S.C. - The Brevard College Men's and Women's Cross Country teams began their season this past Saturday at the Eye Opener meet held at the Roger Milliken Center.
The Tornados competed against teams from King College, Mars Hill, Anderson, Spartanburg Methodist, Catawba, Limestone, Truett-McConnell, Toccoa Falls, Carson-Newman, Belmont Abbey, Piedmont, Newberry, Converse, Brenau and Salem.
The women had the early meet as the teams started at 8 a.m. Out of the 12 team field, the Tornados finished seventh.
Melissa Schmidt paced BC with a 21:51 five-kilometer run to finish 26th out of the 105 runners. Ariel Muiselaar followed in 22:29. Madelyn Larouche crossed the line in 22:32 and Danielle Messer turned in a time of 22:51 for a top-50 finish. Christie Converso covered the course in 23:03, while Hannah Beck ran an even 25:00 with Chynna Shipp finishing just behind at 25:19.
The men finished eight in the meet between 13 teams. Matt Lambert led the Tornados, finishing the eight-kilometer race in 29:19 for a 28th place individual finish in the 97 runner field. Matt Crowe crossed at 29:30 to finish two places back. Jonathon Lavelle followed close behind at 29:42 to finish 36th. Anthony McCaffrey turned in a 31:57 time. Charles Spencer ran the course in 32:41, with Tiffon Tapia and Zach Hazen finishing close behind at 33:50 and 36:33 respectively.
The Tornados resume competition next Saturday at the Pre-Regional Meet held in Wingate, N.C.
