Tornados fall at home to #24 Wingate, 3-0October 21, 2009
Larsen has career game with 14 kills and eight digs
Brevard, N.C. - Chelsea Larsen’s 14 kill-eight dig effort led the Tornados (11-11, 1-10 SAC) on Wednesday night against the #24-ranked Wingate Bulldogs (25-1, 12-0 SAC), but Brevard was unable to overcome Lauren Billo’s 16 kills as the Tornados fell to the visitors, 25-18, 29-27 and 25-18.
Brooke Seaman recorded six kills for the game to go with two blocked shots and libero Rebecca Schoonover had eight digs in the first set on her way to a game-high 16 on the evening for the Tornados, while setter Bethany Stevenson had 27 set assists and hit 66.7 percent for the game.
Stormi Gale recorded 11 kills to go with Billo’s 16 and recorded seven digs and three blocks on the evening. Maggie Malone had 13 digs for the Bulldogs and Liz Willis set up the Wingate attack with 26 assists.
The Tornados and Bulldogs stayed close throughout the first set as Brevard tied the game up three times with the final one coming at the 11-11 mark where a kill by Chelsey Trojan and attack errors by Jacki Emmenecker and Grace Krauser brought the Tornados back from an 11-8 deficit.
Wingate responded with a 6-1 run as Gale fired in a pair of kills and Emmenecker and Willis both placed in kills to go up 17-12.
The Tornados continued to battle back through the first set, but Wingate ran out the first set with the seven point win, 25-18.
Brevard took the lead in the second set, going up 10-7 as Larsen started to get hot, placing in four kills in the early going.
Wingate battled back to tie the score at 13 as Emmenekcer and Gale supported Billo’s four kills with kills of their own.
The Tornados again went up three points late in the set, taking a 20-17 lead after Stevenson’s kill, but the Bulldogs against battled back to tie the game up at 24 apiece.
The Tornados were unable to gain an advantage in the extra time, but Billo drove home a pair of kills to give Wingate the 2-0 lead in the game at 29-27.
In the third set, the Tornados and Bulldogs were tied after the first ten points at 5-5, but Wingate would proceed to go on a 20-12 run to close out the game, capped by Gale’s kill at the end off the assist from Malone.
Brevard is back in action on Saturday, October 24th, as the Tornados host Catawba College in Boshamer Gymnasium. First serve between the Tornados and Indians is set for 2 p.m. Wingate is also in action on Saturday as they participate in the Lander Invitational, taking on Lander at 11 a.m.
