Cycling team recognized by City of Brevard in honor of National ChampionshipDecember 8, 2009
Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College National Champion Cycling team was recognized by the City of Brevard as the Brevard City Council congratulated the team for garnering a National Championship Title for both Brevard College and the community of Brevard.
Mayor Jimmy Harris presented each of the 12 cyclists who participated in the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships held from October 17th-19th in Truckee, Calif. The Tornados accumulated 663 points through the three day event and received eight podium finishes, led by Johanne Tuttle’s second straight omnium title.
"This is a win that these student athletes will always remember and is a great milestone for the program," Coach Thad Walker had to say. "This is also a championship that will serve as a foundation for the program’s continued growth and development. This group of student athletes will be able to look at the success of future Brevard College Cycling Teams and know that they were there for the first one and established a culture of a national championship program for all future teams to live up to."
The Brevard Cycling team presented the City of Brevard with a framed National Championship jersey to display in the Visitor Center on behalf of the team and the BC athletic department, while Mayor Harris presented the team with a copy of the proclamation in recognition of their athletic achievement during the Brevard City Council meeting on December 7th.
"This exchange of recognition symbolizes the reciprocal value between the College and the Community; our student-athletes not only brought home a National Championship Title to the College but also to the Community," commented Brevard College Director of Athletics, Kim Pate. "The student-athletes wear the name Brevard on our jerseys with great pride, and when they represent the college, they in conjunction are representing this wonderful City."
The Tornados cycling team continues to build in their fourth season in existence under Coach Thad Walker as Brevard has improved every season after finishing eighth in 2007, fourth last year and now is the reigning Mountain Bike National Champion.
