Whitson's monster game leads Tornados past Oakland City, 74-63
Roper scores 23 as Brevard snaps two-game skid
Oakland City, Ind. - Five Tornados eclipsed double figures as the Brevard College men’s basketball team overcame a pair of Mighty Oaks who recorded double-doubles in snapping a two-game skid with a 74-63 win over host Oakland City University on Wednesday night.
Josh Roper led the way scoring-wise for the Tornados (6-3, 1-0 SAC) with his fourth straight 20-point effort with 23 points, going 10 of 19 from the field as well as dishing out six assists and pulling down five rebounds. Jonathan Whitson dominated the paint for Brevard with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Whitson also had seven steals and five blocked shots before fouling out late in the game.
Shane Galloway added 12 points and Darin Dellinger and Drew Schauss each added 10 as the team shot 30-67 from the floor on the evening, connecting on 44.8 percent of their attempts. The Tornados also had 16 steals in the contest, forcing 18 Mighty Oaks turnovers compared to coughing the ball up seven times.
Oakland City (6-5) was led by the duo of Nathan Schumacher and Jared Maners who each recorded double-doubles with Schumacher scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds while Maners had 10 points and 10 assists in the contest. Brandon Hopf led the team with 17 points and Craig Parks added 11 points as Oakland City outrebounded Brevard 40-33 in the game.
The host Mighty Oaks opened up the first half, holding a nine-point lead with 5:02 remaining as Parks connected twice from behind the arc and Josh Wilmes added a three-pointer as Oakland City held a 22-13 lead. Brevard battled back with an 11-2 run capped by Schauss’ made three-pointer with 1:12 left in the half as the teams were knotted up at 24. Following a pair of Wilmes’ free throws which put Oakland City up by two, Roper and Whitson both connected on jumpers as the Tornados went into the locker room with the 28-26 lead.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Tornados built a five-point lead at 38-33 with 14:49 remaining as Shane Galloway connected on the front end of a pair of free throws. A jumper by Cody Siniard put the score at 40-35 less than a minute later before Oakland City responded with a 6-0 run behind Hopf’s four points to give the host squad the 41-40 lead at the 12:00 minute mark.
Oakland City tied the game up one final time at 47 all behind a three-pointer by Maners, but Whitson scored eight points in the next five minutes and Dellinger, Shane Galloway and Schauss all added three-pointers as the Tornados closed out the game with a 12-5 spurt to clinch the win, 74-63.
Brevard returns to North Carolina for their next contest as the Tornados continue South Atlantic Conference play on the road against Mars Hill College. The Tornados split their contests against the Lions last season, winning the first game at home 90-80, while falling at Mars Hill, 95-78. Tipoff between Brevard and Mars Hill in Stanford Arena is set for 4 p.m.
