Stanley Jones, Michael Gist and Justin Jefferson recognized in postseason award
Pittsburg, Kan. - Don Hansen’s Football Gazette has released its 2009 NCAA Division II All-Super Region Two squad yesterday, marking the seventh year Football Gazette has selected NCAA Division II All-Region teams. Brevard College’s Stanley Jones, Michael Gist and Justin Jefferson were selected to the team after their contributions guided the Tornados to a 7-4 record in the Tornados fourth year on the playing field.
Jones, a senior inside linebacker from Spartanburg, S.C., led the South Atlantic Conference in tackles and tackles per game this season with 116 total tackles with an average of 10.5 per game to go with four sacks and 12 tackles for loss in being named to the Don Hansen’s All-Super Region Two squad as a First Team selection. Jones finishes his collegiate career as the modern-day record holder in tackles for the Tornados with 344 tackles in his career. Jones was also named SAC Defensive Player of the Week this season on his 16 tackle-three sack performance in week three against Chowan and was named a member of the 2009 All-SAC First Team by the coaches in the South Atlantic Conference.
Gist and Jefferson were both selected to Don Hansen’s All-Super Region Two Third Team.
Gist, a 2009 All-SAC First Teamer as the sophomore from North Augusta, Ga. finished second in the South Atlantic Conference in interceptions with five on the season, in which he accumulated 157 return yards, including an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown against Southern Virginia that sealed the win for the Tornados. Gist finished the season with 59 tackles and was seventh in the SAC in passes defended with 11.
Jefferson, a senior defensive end from Greensboro, N.C., was an All-SAC Second Team selection, finishing the season tied for the most quarterback sacks in the South Atlantic Conference with nine on the season. Jefferson had arguably his best game of the season also against Chowan as he recorded eight tackles and 3.5 sacks in the game as the Tornados dropped the Hawks quarterback nine times in the game. Jefferson, who also works with the Brevard College men’s basketball team as a Student Assistant, finished the season with 51 tackles and was fourth in the conference in both tackles for loss and fumble recoveries with 12.5 tackles for loss on the season and three recoveries.
The national publication, an authority on small college football, has selected NCAA Division II All-America teams since 1988.
The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2009 NCAA Division II Football Gazette All-America team will be named in later this month.
National Quarterfinalist University of North Alabama of the Gulf South Conference led the way with 11 honorees, including a pair of first-team selections. National semifinalist Carson-Newman College was next with eight selections and two first-teamers as well. GSC-member Arkansas Tech had three first-team selections among its five honorees. The University of North Carolina-Pembroke, an independent, along with GSC-member University of West Alabama also had five selections to the squad.
A total of 93 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-Super Region Two honors. Players from 27 schools in Super Region Two earned All-Region accolades.
