Apps wins singles match in Tornados defeat
Lander tops Brevard, 7-2
Brevard, N.C. - Shane Apps defeated John Cappabianca at #6 singles, but the Tornados were unable to overcome the visiting Lander Bearcats on Friday afternoon, falling 7-2.
The Tornados fall to 0-3 on the season, while Lander improves to 7-1 overall.
Scott McCormick and Andrew Thompson opened the matches at #1 doubles, defeating Lander’s Henrik Willers and Christopher Mattson 9-8 (3). Lander rallied to take the other two doubles matches as Paul-Henri Arrigoni and Maxime Desmars defeated Brevard’s Jonathan Kuhn and Jarred Fisher 8-3, while Pierre Frances and Gary Bertoldo topped Dorian Feron and Apps, 8-3.
In singles play, the #16th-ranked Bearcats took matches #1-5 in straight sets as Arrigoni topped McCormick, 7-5, 6-3, Thompson fell to Mattsson, 6-1, 6-2, Frances defeated Kuhn, 6-0, 6-0. Juan Manrique defeated Fisher 6-1, 6-4 and Feron fell to Desmars 6-1, 6-1. Apps carried home the lone victory at #6 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3.
The Tornados open conference play tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Newberry, S.C. to take on SAC opponent Newberry College, with first serve of doubles play set for 2 p.m.
