Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados dropped two close games to #9 Lenoir-Rhyne, Saturday afternoon, losing 5-4 and 5-3 in their final South Atlantic Conference doubleheader of the regular season.
Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 44-6 and 15-1 in the conference, while Brevard falls to 17-26, and 5-11 in the conference.
Game 1: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Brevard 4
Martika Elmore pitcher six innings for the Tornados, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out eight. Elmore also led the Tornados with two RBIs after jacking a homerun to left center field with Chelsi Mallory on base, breaking up Dawon Millwood’s no-hitter in the third inning.
Her homerun put Brevard ahead 2-1, but Lenoir-Rhyne responded with three runs in their half of the inning to regain the lead, 4-2.
The Bears added one more run in the fourth when Sarah Atkins, who led the team with two RBIs, grounded out and scored Brittany Cherry.
Mallory hit a late solo homer with two outs as Brevard threatened to tie the game, but were turned away and handed the 5-4 loss.
Game 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Brevard 3
Nicole Heusel led the Tornados with two RBIs in the second game as Liz Houser started and pitched six innings, giving up five runs on nine hits.
Brevard scored first, adding a run in the top of the first inning when Kristina Clayton knocked in Sarah Carlos who led off with a double.
The Bears responded with a three run bottom of the inning, led by a Duckworth homerun.
The Tornados tied the game in the third on a Heusel two-run double, but fell behind again as Lenoir-Rhyne added a run in their half of the inning making the score 4-3.
The Bears added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Brittany Davidson hit a RBI single to seal the 5-3 win for the nationally ranked team.
The Tornados return to action on Monday when they travel to Virginia Intermont for a non-conference doubleheader.
Final standings and conference tournament seedings will be announced on Sunday by the conference office.
